Marta received her bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the University Pablo de Olavide in Seville, Spain. Afterward, she moved to Germany and joined the group of Prof. Feldbrügge in Düsseldorf, where she performed her Master’s thesis on the generation of new natural product variants from the phytopathogenic fungus Ustilago maydis.

In 2017, she started her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Luzhetskyy at the University of Saarbrücken, Germany. She has worked on the heterologous expression of secondary metabolite gene clusters from Streptomyces bacteria, which has allowed her to find new bioactive structures and characterise the biosynthetic genes of the known antibiotic nybomycin.

In her free time, she enjoys bouldering, cooking, hiking, and visiting friends all around the world.
